Assange ‘safe’ – Carr suggests Australia wary
of extraditing to US due to death penalty

Julian Assange would have been extradited to the US already, if they really wanted him, Foreign Minister Bob Carr intimated at a civil liberties briefing in Canberra. Extradition for them would be easier from the UK than Sweden, he said. Mr Carr also reminded delegates that Australia does not approve extradition to the USA under threat of the death penalty.

  1. Carrs evasive verbal tapdancing is an insult to concerned assange supporters Guillard witholding info exchange from USA is indication enough of her views and intentions. I think she will pay heavily at election time, especially in her own seat.REMEMBER HOWARD LOST HIS SEAT. TAKE NOTE JULIA.

  2. I don’t believe that for a minute. Read the DFAT embassy cables that express concern for Assange (starting from page 35). Sweden has been complicit in Rendition to the US before. The US won’t seek the death penalty, they’ll hold him without charge for an extended period of time as they have done with Bradley Manning et al. The UN special rapporteur on torture has formally accused the US government of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment of Manning. This is one of their own citizens. Please don’t insult my intelligence.

  3. Well, maybe the USA could take him anytime they wanted. However, I strongly suspect they would rather take a convicted sex offender than a matyr. In fact if he were a convicted sex offender they may not have to bother with taking him at all, as he would effectively be unable to run wikileaks.
